Danny and the Dressmakers 1980 at The Aklam Hall under the Westway Notting Hill London. Al Hempsall on the Drums,Graham Massey (in huge tubular Bandage)guitar ,Sisier Maura Noone vocals,Kif Kif and JB from the 012 as guests..probably their last appearance. THIS IS A FAN BLOG The spirit of Danny and The Dressmakers is with me in every day life, I cannot watch Coronation Street without thinking of 'Ernie Bishops Dead body', the number of times when on the dole I'd want to break into 'wheres me fucking giro?', and dont mention Rickenbackers or Cholesterol levels, hey ho, hey ho. My best friend Davey brought round a copy of the 'Weird Noise' EP of Fuck Off Records way back when, this was a revelation, there were other crap groups out there like our own ! We then took to trawling the ads in fanzines and the back pages of Sounds until it was time for our first mail order experience , Davey ordered 'Go Mental', then I ordered '200 Cancellations' the soundtrack to those teenage years! - in return we sent off our efforts to impress F.O Records, who were doing a series of tapezines i think we were having a shot at ('tapezine 4' rings a bell) We were encouraged and inspired enough to make our own compliation tapes. Fast forward a few decades.. I recently downloaded '39 Golden Grates', while laughing out loud at 'Space Oddity' I wondered: 'what else is out there ?' The Street Level site seems to be full of viruses and wont let me in, otherwise its been good having a dig around the net to see whats out there. any audio, scans or anecdotes would be great! LINKS and SOURCES include: Manchester District Music Archive Danny and the Dressmakers at Last.FM Danny and the Dressmakers on Youtube, sort of Danny and the Dressmakers on the compilation tape 'Back to Sing for Free' - the first Fuck Off release courtesy of spurensicherung blog on with it - this is where it all began, for us at least: VARIOUS - 'WEIRD NOISE' EP SIDE A 1 The Door And The Window - The Number One Entertainer (3:39) 2 Danny And The Dressmakers - Legalize Vimto (3:33) 3 Danny And The Dressmakers - Hey Ho Hey Ho My Cholestrol Level Is Low {0:25) 4 Instant Automatons - Electronic Music (3:10) 5 Danny And The Dressmakers - Don't Make Another Bassguitar Mr Rickenbaker (2:05) SIDE B 1 The 012 - Fish From Tahiti (4:02) 2 Danny And The Dressmakers - Cathy And Claire (1:42) 3 The Sell-Outs - The Ballad Of Fuck Off Records (3:17) 4 Danny And The Dressmakers - The Truth About Unemployment (0:07) various - weird noise ep Sleeve notes: "The Sell-Outs, The 012, The Door + The Window, and The Instant Automatons recorded at home on 4 track and 2 track tape machines. Danny + the Dressmakers get that unique "Dressmakers white noise" effect with 3rd generation cassette recordings. Whole thing got together by Kif Kif, Nag, Bendle and Protag and dedicated to the Street Level organisation. 60p maximum price." DANNY AND THE DRESSMAKERS - GO MENTAL Could this be the first D&TDMakers bootleg ? I believe 'Go Mental' was a C90 originally , the one that Davey ordered. I borrowed it and set about making my own copy. All I had was a (crappy) C60 and not even the means to photocopy the cover, so I copied it out, with a pen. The quality's gone right down maan. Upgrades appreciated , now we live in the future and all. 1. Thanks for all this palaver. I wrote a piece for an American mag called UGLY THINGS on Fuck Off Records way back. Even before then I frequented the 'orrible Portobello Road back in the late 70s and saw all the crap bands play [incl the legendary Sex Beatles; awesome]; Stephen Gillitt [Street Level] is a lovely chap when you can get hold of him; Graham Massey [on Myspace] is also a great bloke & will chat about "the ol' days". I'm sure that if you could contact him & if he's sober Mark E Smith [a Dressmakers fan] would wax lyrical also. If you can ever get hold of the Teen Vampires tape please put it up!

  3. Great to hear these again. I lent my cassette of 'Go Mental' to a friend in 1980(?) and never saw it again. I can still sing along to 'Charles Bronson lives in a caravan.' Jonathan.

  4. Re: MES a fan? Is it coincidence that the compilation '50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong' is subtitled '39 Golden Greats'?
